Affirmative Psychotherapy: Caring for our LGB and TGNC Clients

As a result of a variety of converging factors including societal oppression and discrimination, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (TG), and gender nonconforming (GNC) individuals are at greater risk for depression, anxiety, suicidality, substance abuse, and trauma than same-aged peers. Mental health professionals are vital in caring for these diverse populations and are well positioned to break cycles of oppression both within therapy and through advocacy. The purpose of this seminar is to increase personal awareness, increase knowledge, and build greater clinical competency in working with LGB and TGNC clients.

Instructors:

• Joseph Longo, PhD – Joseph Longo, PhD, is a licensed psychologist and behavioral health consultant at Denver Health’s Early Intervention HIV Clinic and Westside Adult Internal Medicine Clinic. He completed postdoctoral training in integrated care at Salud Family Health Centers. Dr. Longo has been active in developing diversity competency training for both medical and mental health providers and behavioral health protocols for affirmative care for transgender patients within the Denver Health system and in conjunction with the Denver Health LGBT Center of Excellence. Previous experiences include federally qualified community health centers, correctional care, and college counseling centers.
• Kimberly Mahon, LCSW – Kimberly Mahon, LCSW, is a licensed clinical social worker and behavioral health consultant at Denver Health’s Federico Peña Family Health Center. She completed her master’s degree at University of Denver, completing an additional certification in interpersonal trauma. Kim completed internships in the school and medical settings. Kim has a special interest in addictions and is completing her Licensed Addictions Certification this year. Kim also has a special interest in transgender health care and is working with the IBH Academy to develop trainings to address affirmative behavioral health practices for transgender patients in primary care. Previous experiences include community mental health and school social work.
