Denver voters approved ballot measure 2Q, an important step toward ensuring more sustainable funding for Denver Health. The 0.34% sales tax (just over 3 cents on every $10 purchase) will generate an estimated additional $70 million per year to support operational costs for the health care system.
The new funding for Denver Health supports five areas: emergency and trauma care, primary medical care, mental health care, pediatric care and recovery support services.
“The voters of Denver have shown without a doubt that health care is a critical component of a vibrant and dynamic city,” said CEO Donna Lynne. “I’m excited that this supportive funding will help us to invest in our people, our infrastructure and our technology year-after-year.”
This additional money from the City sales tax will not fully close the gap Denver Health faces. Lynne also told supporters that Denver Health will continue to be fiscally responsible and accountable going forward and will explore additional funding sources through philanthropy as well as the State and the federal government.
“The passage of 2Q means so much to our entire City’s health. Thank you, Denver voters,” said Councilmember Jamie Torres, the primary co-sponsor of the bill. “You have ensured that Denver Health can continue to provide crucial health services in our schools, in our neighborhood clinics, and at their main campus. I’m eternally grateful that Denver will continue to have a strong health care safety net and Level I Trauma Center for generations to come!”
Co-sponsoring the bill was Councilmember Serena Gonzales-Gutierrez who added, “Denver Health is a vital part of our community, and voters showed how important health care is to them. I’m so proud to be a part of this victory to prioritize health care and Denver Health’s role in strengthening access for all.”
Funding from 2Q will start Jan. 1, 2025.
