Do mammograms hurt? It's a common question we get here at the Denver Health Breast Care Center, especially from people going in for their first breast screening exam. Because getting a mammogram regularly is the number one way to detect breast cancer early, when it is most treatable, the small amount of pain you might experience could save your life.

Racial disparities in breast cancer survival rates among African-American women has been well-documented over the past 40 years. Early studies largely connected poor survival rates in this group to having a lower economic and social status. We now know, based on evidence, that there are multiple factors causing this issue, ranging from breast cancer prevention efforts to what happens to this group after breast cancer treatment.

While understanding and managing your own personal risk for breast cancer can be overwhelming, it's crucial for prevention and early detection. Studies highlight the importance of early detection in improving breast cancer treatment outcomes. June is Men's Health Month and while we talk a lot about the need for women to get regular screenings for breast cancer, men can be at risk for getting breast cancer, too.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Denver Health wants to make sure you know your risk and take the proper steps to keep yourself healthy and safe from this deadly, but survivable disease. We are urging all of our patients to make sure that they continued to get screened for breast cancer, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.
