Lactation Support

breastfeeding classFor women who plan to breastfeed their newborns, Denver Health has international board-certified lactation consultants and certified lactation counselors that are committed to helping a mother achieve the best breastfeeding experience for her and her baby.

We offer classes to help moms prepare for breastfeeding prior to delivery. We offer lactation support in the hospital to help mom and baby shortly after birth. In addition, breastfeeding support and education services are available through the Denver Health Women, Infants and Children program which has offices at several locations in Denver.

Awards and Recognitions

The Denver Health Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology was the recipient of the Celebrate 6 Award for Breastfeeding Excellence in 2023. This award recognizes birthing facilities that have implemented evidence-based policies and practices known to increase breastfeeding success and improve maternal and infant health outcomes. In Colorado, 90% of mothers choose to start breastfeeding. Research shows that by implementing at least 6 of the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding, the birthing facility will better support the vast majority of Colorado mothers to not only start breastfeeding, but also enable them to breastfeed longer, resulting in more long term health benefits to both mother and child. Denver Health is proud to have received this recognition and is dedicated to supporting the lactation needs of all our patients.

Additional Lactation Support and Resources

Denver WIC offers free breastfeeding education to all Denver residents at the five different WIC clinics. Please call 303-602-6550 to ask about upcoming times and locations.

While mom and baby are still at Denver Health recovering from the delivery, a lactation support specialist will visit to help mom and baby get a good start to breastfeeding.

WIC’s goal is to help women learn about breastfeeding and how to successfully start and continue breastfeeding as long as they choose. Breastfeeding information is available in multiple languages and some clinics offer additional service in Spanish.

La Leche League of Denver hosts several breastfeeding support groups throughout Denver and at Denver Health.

One of our Denver Health Lactation experts can provide breastfeeding help and support after your baby is born. This free service is for patients of Denver Health (women and infants). Please call 303-602-8340 to schedule an appointment.

If you are enrolled on the Denver Health WIC program, you can also reach out for lactation support by calling 303-602-9444.  For more information about WIC, visit https://www.coloradowic.gov/about

These special clinics hosted by Webb Pediatric Clinic within the Webb Center for Primary Care and Westside Family Health Center Pediatric Clinic are designed to help ensure that our moms and our newborn patients, receive guidance on nursing from a pediatrician and a nurse who specialize in breastfeeding. Your baby will be weighed before and after the feeding, so you can see how much milk your baby is getting during a feed. You will also be able to ask questions and share concerns with other breastfeeding mothers if you are interested.

We will track your baby’s progress to ensure that the baby is gaining weight and growing properly, and will provide a plan that is unique for you and your baby to make breastfeeding easier. Call Webb clinic at 303-602-8340 and Westside clinic at 303-602-0888 to make an appointment.

Webb: Every Wednesday | 9:30 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Westside: Every Tuesday | 9:30 a.m. – 12 p.m.
