What to Do if You Have Been Exposed to a Toxin or Poison

If you or someone you know has been exposed to a poison or toxin, you can call the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222 or use PoisonHelp.org to get immediate assistance. Users and callers can share details about an exposure and get information about the best next steps to manage the situation.

When you use PoisonHelp.org or call the Poison Help line, you may be asked the following questions to help identify the best next steps:

  • What substances you think the person may have swallowed, inhaled or touched
  • How long it has been since the exposure
  • How much was taken (if you know)
  • If the person is experiencing any symptoms 
  • Age of individual
  • Any medical conditions that may impact a person's risk of severe side effects

If an individual has collapsed, had a seizure, has trouble breathing, or can’t be awakened, call 911 immediately.
