Transgender Voice Therapy

Denver Health is proud to offer voice therapy for transgender and gender nonconforming patients from a team of qualified, experienced speech therapists. Transgender voice therapy, also known as speech therapy or voice training, is part of Denver Health's network of services built specifically for the LGBTQ Community. In addition to clinical knowledge and experience, we strive to make our clinic a welcoming and safe space for all patients.

What is Non-Binary & Transgender Voice Therapy?

The goal of transgender voice therapy is unique for every individual. Some common targets of voice training are to achieve a more feminine, masculine or gender-neutral voice quality. At the beginning of treatment with a new client, we will establish goals and create a plan for achieving these goals.

Our Services

Denver Health offers a full range of voice therapy evaluation and treatment. Our care providers commit to specialized LGBTQ health training to improve your care experience. In addition to voice therapy for transgender and gender nonconforming patients, we offer traditional voice therapy for patients who have:

  • Vocal cord nodules and polyps.
  • Muscle tension dysphonia.
  • Spasmodic dysphonia.
  • A range of other diagnoses.

Voice Feminization Therapy MTF

Voice therapy will work to achieve a voice that is healthy and natural sounding and aligns with a patient's gender expression. In transgender male-to-female patients, the goal is to achieve a more feminine vocal quality, through the use of special exercises, techniques and training.

Voice Masculinization Therapy FTM

Voice therapy will work to achieve a voice that is healthy and natural sounding and aligns with a patient's gender expression. In transgender female-to-male patients, the goal is to achieve a more masculine vocal quality, through the use of special exercises, techniques and training.

Nonconforming (non-binary) Voice Therapy

Nonconforming voice therapy will work to achieve a voice that is healthy and natural sounding and aligns with a patient's gender expression, through the use of special exercises, techniques and training.

Patients are not required to go through surgery and are not expected to go through it. Any patient who has the desire to change their voice and has the time and effort to dedicate to this process is welcome in our clinic.

For patients who have had or are considering voice feminization surgery to alter pitch, voice therapy is highly recommended both before and after the surgery.

Some insurances cover voice therapy. Call your insurance provider to learn if voice therapy is covered on your plan. Self-pay is also an option for voice therapy.

Initial visits for voice therapy are 60 minutes; follow up visits are 30 minutes. All of this time is spent one-on-one with a speech therapist who will tailor the treatment to each client’s specific goals.
