Dr. Eric Altonen

Eric Aaltonen, M.D.
Chief of Interventional Radiology

Subspecialty Focus: Interventional Radiology

Dr. Aaltonen is an Interventional Radiologist (IR) with a clinical focus including interventional oncology and portal hypertension. At Denver Health, Dr. Aaltonen is the IR Chief and serves on the Credentialing and Procedural Sedation committees. Dr. Aaltonen graduated magna cum laude from Princeton University earning a degree in chemical engineering with a focus on engineering biology. Dr. Aaltonen earned his medical degree from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and concurrently a Master of Public Health degree from the Northwestern University Graduate School. He began residency training in diagnostic radiology at the University of Illinois Chicago where he was named a chief resident during his second year prior to completing residency training at New York University.

Dr. Aaltonen completed his vascular and interventional radiology fellowship at University of California San Francisco in 2013. Dr. Aaltonen holds the title of Clinical Associate Professor at Denver Health’s academic affiliate, the University of Colorado School of Medicine and is board-certified by the American Board of Radiology. Dr. Aaltonen’s research and education interests include quality and operational optimization. Dr. Aaltonen belongs to the Society of Interventional Radiology and has served on the interventional oncology service line, association of IR program directors, and association of IR chiefs. Prior to Denver Health, Dr. Aaltonen practiced at NYU Langone Health where he served as IR fellowship and residency program director and was co-primary investigator for a multi-year Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality grant focusing on the inpatient IR experience.

 

Dr. Stephen Dreyer

Subspecialty Focus: Interventional Radiology

Dr. Stephen Dreyer is an Interventional Radiologist with an expertise in the area of image-guided procedures. His areas of clinical focus include trauma, dialysis access creation and maintenance, and interventional oncology.

At Denver Health, Dr. Dreyer serves on the Trauma Council, as well as participates in many multi-disciplinary boards throughout the hospital.

Dr. Dreyer graduated from the University of Texas with a degree in biochemistry. He earned his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine where he simultaneously completed a Master of Business Administration at Rice University. Dr. Dreyer’s internship and residency were completed at University Hospitals Case Medical Center. Dr. Dreyer completed his fellowship in Vascular and Interventional Radiology at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. He is board-certified by the American Board of Radiology.

Dr. Dreyer holds the title of Assistant Professor at Denver Health’s academic affiliate, the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Dr. Dreyer particularly focuses on the education of residents and fellows in the area of interventional radiology.

 

Dr. Meredith McDermott

Subspecialty Focus: Interventional Radiology

Dr. McDermott is an Interventional Radiologist (IR) with a clinical focus including women’s health and venous interventions. At Denver Health, Dr. McDermott serves on the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee. Dr  McDermott graduated from the University of Pittsburgh earning a degree in chemistry. Dr. McDermott earned her medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. She began residency training in diagnostic radiology at New York University School of Medicine. Dr. McDermott completed her vascular and interventional radiology fellowship also at New York University in 2016 where she was named chief fellow. 

Dr. McDermott holds the title of Assistant Professor at Denver Health’s academic affiliate, the University of Colorado School of Medicine and is board-certified by the American Board of Radiology. Dr. McDermott’s research and education interests include women’s health in interventional radiology. Dr. McDermott belongs to the Society of Interventional Radiology and has served on the Women’s Health Service Line and the Government Affairs Committee. Prior to Denver Health, Dr. McDermott practiced at NYU Langone Health where she served as the educational representative for medical student and residency rotations in interventional radiology, as well as the director of operations at NYU Brooklyn.

 

Dr. Adam Schwertner

Adam Schwertner, M.D.
Assistant Professor, Department of Radiology, University of Colorado School of Medicine
Subspecialty Focus: Interventional Radiology

Dr. Schwertner is an Interventional Radiologist with an expertise in the area of Vascular and Interventional Radiology. Particular areas of clinical focus include interventional oncology and dual-energy CT applications within Interventional Radiology

Dr. Schwertner graduated from the University of Iowa with an undergraduate degree in Biomedical Engineering. Dr. Schwertner was a presidential scholar while at the University of Iowa. He earned his medical degree from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine where he graduated with Alpha Omega Alpha honors. Dr. Schwerner’s residency was completed at the University of California, San Francisco, after an internship at the University of Chicago, North Shore. Dr. Schwertner completed Fellowship in Vascular and Interventional Radiology at the University of California, San Francisco. During Dr. Schwerner’s residency, he performed research and gave national presentations on the new training pathway in Interventional Radiology.

Dr. Schwertner holds the title of Assistant Professor at Denver Health’s academic affiliate, the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Dr. Schwertner particularly focuses on the education of residents, fellows, and PA Students in the area of image-guided procedures and Interventional Radiology.

He is board-certified by the American Board of Radiology. Dr. Schwertner belongs to the Society of Interventional Radiology and the Radiological Society of North America.

At Denver Health, Dr. Schwertner serves as the site director for a medical student rotation in Interventional Radiology for medical students from the University of Colorado School of Medicine.
