Neurology

The Neurology Division provides care for patients with diseases of the brain, spinal cord, nerves and muscles. Neurology Division physicians see patients on an inpatient Neurology service, an inpatient consultation service and through a variety of Neurology outpatient clinics.

The Neurology Division also collaborates closely with colleagues in Neurosurgery, Diagnostic Neuroradiology, Interventional Radiology, Rehabilitation and Medical Intensive Care Unit to treat the full spectrum of acute and chronic neurologic illnesses.

Our Services

  • General Neurology clinics are held weekly, staffed by Denver Health neurologists, nurse practitioners and residents from the University of Colorado.
  • Multiple Sclerosis Clinic uses a team approach to address the medical and social needs of patients with multiple sclerosis and related illnesses. It is staffed by providers from Denver Health, University of Colorado residents, a multiple sclerosis specialist neurologist, a nurse practitioner from the Multiple Sclerosis Center at the University of Colorado and social workers from the Multiple Sclerosis Society.
  • HIV Neurology Clinic is held in collaboration with Infectious Disease specialist physicians, HIV specialist nurse practitioners and physician assistants in the HIV/AIDS Clinic.

Research

The Neurology division receives funding from the National Institutes of Health to participate in clinical trials designed to improve treatments for stroke, such as the Warfarin and Aspirin in Patients with Heart Failure and Sinus Rhythm (WARCEF) and Institute for Regional and International Studies (IRIS) studies.

  • WARCEF aims to define the place of warfarin and aspirin in the management of patients with left ventricular systolic dysfunction.
  • IRIS will test the efficacy of treating insulin resistance in non-diabetics as a stroke prevention strategy.
  • The Neurology division has also received industry funding for clinical trials such as ProFESS and FAST studies.
  • The ProFESS study aims to determine whether a blood pressure medication can help prevent a second stroke when given in combination with other specific medications.
  • The FAST study is testing the role of a blood clotting agent in improving outcomes in people with intracerebral hemorrhage. These trials have completed enrollment and will release results soon.

The Neurology Division is also conducting basic studies looking at the role of protein misfolding in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
